In the online world, it has become essential to get your head around Cybersecurity threats, and what it might mean for you at home or in your business.
The most common or significant threats we see are:
– Malicious or unnecessary software getting installed on your devices (malware and viruses)
– Ransomware (a type of malware but focused on locking your computer or network)
– Phishing (scam messages – mostly angling for ways to get your personal information or bank details)
– Email compromise and identity fraud or theft
The good news is that there plenty of things you can do to minimise any risks:
– Make sure that all of your devices are tuned up and up to date (software updates, patches etc)
– Make sure you’re across all of your online accounts/identities and two-factor authentication is set up where possible
– Use software to protect you where it makes sense to do so
– Educate yourself (or your staff) to make sure that you can quickly flag any warning signs
– Keep important data and documents backed up – ideally in the cloud
There’s no silver bullet, and there’s plenty of programs out there that promise the world and try to scare you into using them – but many either fall short or do a bunch of stuff that you don’t need and just make your devices slower and harder to use.
